Protecting Your Restaurant Equipment from the Summer Heat

With summer underway, the temperatures are hot! Unfortunately, the high heat can have an affect on your restaurant equipment, especially your refrigeration units and air conditioning. If not properly maintained, your equipment can easily malfunction or breakdown. Keep reading to learn what you can do to protect your restaurant equipment during the hot summer months and how Fast Fix LLC can assist with all your commercial food service equipment maintenance in Missouri and Western Illinois.

Commercial Refrigeration Units

Refrigeration equipment is the most vulnerable to hot weather. The higher the air temperature around the refrigeration unit, the harder the unit has to work to keep it's inside temperature cool. This can cause parts of the refrigeration unit to wear out faster than they typically would, leading to premature repairs and a shorter lifespan for the equipment. The most important thing for you to do is make sure that your refrigeration units are located somewhere cool, i.e. in an air-conditioned room, rather than outside or in a garage. In addition, be sure to keep the area around the refrigeration unit free of boxes and other items that can prevent the heat from escaping the unit. Cleaning the coils regularly can also help your commercial refrigeration units continue to work efficiently throughout the hot summer months. If the coil is dirty, it will cause the compressor to run much hotter and longer, which can lead to damages to the equipment.

Commercial Air Conditioning Units

When the outdoor temperature is much higher than normal, some AC units will have a hard time keeping up. This is especially true when the units are trying to cool a large, hot space, such as a restaurant kitchen. Older systems or those units that are too small for the area that needs to be cooled, will have to work even harder, which can lead to malfunction or even a breakdown. When your commercial AC unit stops cooling altogether or isn't cooling as quickly as before, there are a few maintenance things you can do. First try replacing the air filters; in most cases, this should be done monthly anyway. Then check the cleanliness of the coils because dirt and debris can clog it, which severely effects the efficiency of the AC unit. You also want to make sure an area of 12 feet around the unit is clear to allow proper airflow.
